Studying Books That Aren’t the Bible

Gentlemen and Brothers in Christ:

I am confused about some teachings at Church.  We are beginning a new Bible Study this Fall…except it isn’t from the Bible.  It is based on a book by Joyce Meyer, Battlefield of the Mind.  My concern is:  1)  Even though a man is teaching the class, he is using a book written by a woman (whom I believe to be not walking as she should).  Doesn’t that fall under a woman usurping a man’s authority?  And 2) Why would a Bible Study not be from the Word of God?  Why do people feel like they need something other than the Word?  I really don’t want to “start” something and I don’t know who to ask.  I have questions about our Elders being qualified to serve so I’m at a loss.

I look forward to your advice.

In Christian Love,

Coral

Hi Coral,

These postings on our site will answer your question about Joyce Meyer and women teaching in the Body of Christ:

Meyer, Joyce: Segment in “What Kind of Faith Do You Have?”

Diabolical Doctrines: Women Are Ministers of God in Spiritual Authority over Men

As for the technicality of discussing a book on spiritual matters found in the Scriptures as a “Bible study,” that’s not really an issue. The issue is whether the book is in harmony with the Bible, coming from the same Spirit of Truth Who inspired its writing, testifying of Jesus Christ. We know that’s the case with our website, for example, but not with Joyce Meyer’s book.

Now you need to consider why your elders are blind to these things, Coral, and what you need to do about it.

“But He answered and said, Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up. Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch” (Matthew 15:13-14 MKJV).

Believe the Lord or Believe Lies

English - Spanish From: Court To: The Path of Truth Sent: Tuesday, April 05, 2016 10:08 AM Subject: QuestionI was reading an article you wrote on John Piper being a false teacher, and I had a question about it. Before I ask the question I would like to make clear that I am familiar with Piper, but do not completely know his doctrine. I have only watched a few short videos of him on youtube. However, your criticism of him as a false teacher revolved around the fact that he preaches about a place of eternal punishment for nonbelievers (Hell) as you can read from your own writing: One of the biggest and worst lies ever told in manmade Christianity, one that John Piper subscribes to and teaches, is that there is a place of interminable torment and punishment for sinners. Men think to find this doctrine in the Bible, but while it is something the carnal man would wish on others, it is surely not something God has ever said or that ever entered into His mind. He made creation as an act of His love. He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son for it. We are His, bought and paid for by His blood.I was wondering where you got the idea that there is no hell, based on the fact that there are numerous verses in The Bible - some even spoken by Jesus, whom you believe to be God, as I also do - about the existence of a place of eternal punishment for people who do not believe in Christ. See a few examples, of many, below:Revelation 21:8But as for the co...

I’m Righteous Enough to Apologize for Condemning

From: Donald To: The Path of Truth Sent: Friday, June 24, 2016 3:45 PM Subject: All are savedNot sure how I came upon your website but I have began reading much there and to be honest I didn’t now that much theological hair-splitting existed. However; that’s not the purpose of this email. You answered someone’s question on ‘who then can be saved’. If I read your reply correctly, you indicated in so many words that all are eventually saved. In another post I read where you replied to someone’s inquiry that hell is not a literal place or it is kind of a temporary holding cell. (I may have that one wrong, I read a bunch of stuff in one sitting). My purpose here and now is to then ask you to explain Matthew 13:37-42. Another thing I might add is: how is it that you alone have the whole council of God and the tens of thousands of others down through the centuries are all liars? Of the six hundred billion people in the world, God chose only you to receive the Spirit of Truth? If God is love; your condemnation of all that pose legitimate questions to you certainly doesn’t reflect any of that love. What happened to “love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you.”If I sound condemning I ask for your forgiveness.DonaldFrom: Paul Cohen and Victor Hafichuk To: Donald Sent: Friday, July 08, 2016 7:04 AM Subject: Re: All are savedYou not only sound condemning, Donald, you are condemning.
