Studying Books That Aren’t the Bible

Gentlemen and Brothers in Christ:

I am confused about some teachings at Church.  We are beginning a new Bible Study this Fall…except it isn’t from the Bible.  It is based on a book by Joyce Meyer, Battlefield of the Mind.  My concern is:  1)  Even though a man is teaching the class, he is using a book written by a woman (whom I believe to be not walking as she should).  Doesn’t that fall under a woman usurping a man’s authority?  And 2) Why would a Bible Study not be from the Word of God?  Why do people feel like they need something other than the Word?  I really don’t want to “start” something and I don’t know who to ask.  I have questions about our Elders being qualified to serve so I’m at a loss.

I look forward to your advice.

In Christian Love,

Coral

Hi Coral,

These postings on our site will answer your question about Joyce Meyer and women teaching in the Body of Christ:

Meyer, Joyce: Segment in “What Kind of Faith Do You Have?”

Diabolical Doctrines: Women Are Ministers of God in Spiritual Authority over Men

As for the technicality of discussing a book on spiritual matters found in the Scriptures as a “Bible study,” that’s not really an issue. The issue is whether the book is in harmony with the Bible, coming from the same Spirit of Truth Who inspired its writing, testifying of Jesus Christ. We know that’s the case with our website, for example, but not with Joyce Meyer’s book.

Now you need to consider why your elders are blind to these things, Coral, and what you need to do about it.

“But He answered and said, Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up. Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch” (Matthew 15:13-14 MKJV).

Subject: On False Teaching From: Toche <nachman112@yahoo.com> To: ask@thepathoftruth.com <ask@thepathoftruth.com> Date: 12/13/2015 5:17 PM Sir, there is a difference between a false teacher, and a True minister who makes a minor error in doctrine. I just randomly came across your site and thought it was legitimate because I saw the name of truly false, demonic teachers who are propagating damnable doctrines in the world today. But I was suddenly very disappointed when I saw the names of many true Ministers of the gospel, you called false Charles Stanley and John MacArthur? Really? That made me laugh, you must either be really oppressed and deceived by the devil or probably not saved at all John MacArthur is probably one of the most faithful Ministers of the gospel in our Churches today; and you dare ignore all his biblically sound teachings and faithfulness to the word of GOD to concentrate on his specific interpretation of Paul's thorn in the flesh. My friend, I exhort you to examine yourself and change your path. You are rather insulting the majesty of our LORD by being deceived to fight against the true false teachers who have crept into our Churches (Jude 4), and with self-righteous, poor discernment calling GOD'S True Ministers false I advice you to take your website down and seek the LORD to learn to walk in discernment to HIS Light.  Learn to test the fruit of the Spirit in a very loving and submissive heart (1John 4:1) Remain ...

Your message in the subject line was truncated, Carol. Would you like to try again using the body of the email this time to make sure we get your entire letter?   Are you aware that the original Gospel of Luke isn’t available? Today’s Bibles are translations derived from different manuscripts a hundred years or so later than the original texts. And did you know that these manuscripts sometimes differ from one another? Are you suggesting the Holy Spirit inspired those who changed or corrupted the original manuscripts - that God isn’t in agreement with Himself?  Also, read this: In Defense of ExtraBiblical Inspiration of God Paul From: Carol To: Paul Cohen Sent: Monday, February 22, 2016 10:41 AM Subject: Re: ... Religious Cartoons Are Evil for Kids, Too From: Sara To: The Path of Truth Sent: Saturday, October 08, 2016 12:27 PM Subject: Question on 2nd Commandment Hi Paul and Victor, I have been perusing your site- I found it while on a search to confirm what I was feeling about nativities and thank you for confirming that :). I have been thinking about all of this a lot. Having been raised Catholic but converting to Protestant when I was sixteen I still have many "traditions" that need to be undone.   My current question is this- I have many children's bibles for my 2 kids. I am finding all of them have drawings (cartoonish ones) of Jesus when the story mentions Jesus. One called "Jesus Calling" (given my my brother's family) even has a section after the story where "Jesus" talks about what was just read. I find that to be an abomination and have been torn on getting rid of it or marking through that section with a permanent marker because I think it does a good job telling the stories on a level the kids can understand (mine are 3 and 1). What are your thoughts? My other question is probably obvious. Are the depictions of Jesus in the children's bibles graven images?  If so how do I go about teaching the stories from the bible in a way they can understand- should I just use mine and then try my best to explain what it is saying in terms they understand? Thank you in advance!! Best, Sara From: Paul Cohen and Victor Hafichuk To: Sara Sent: Wednesday, O...
